PodShoutMobCast+Up

* Really starting to get to me. Podcasting (automatically downloading the latest files from some server to your iPod), ShoutCasting (radio digitized then streamed over the web) and moblogging (sending rants and raves and/or commentaries to some server from your mobile phone).
* Now an interesting term called mobcasting (by Andy Carvin of NYC), where he talks of uploading voice recordings to a server. But in this is really a subset of moblogging, just voice instead of text. Apparently he hasn't been able to do it realtime yet, and it's one content type that I have been thinking of for a while.
* What is really on my mind though is doing a music service that combines all these ideas and automatically creates a distinct server space for each new user, where you keep your favorite songs that are played on a constant loop (ie. radio). So if you have a constant stream on your phone, you don't need to constantly fiddle around with sticks or disks or drives or anything: all your favorite music playing on your own "radio" station. The uploads would be done through the phone, or other connected device for that matter. Yes, it's very much simpler to do it through the PC, but uploads through the au phone network are safer than the big wide (+wild) internet, and it also means I don't have to build a separate program to house the functionality. Problem comes when someone spoofs their identity (ie. pretend to be a mobile phone but are not and then well, we're back to square one), but I don't have an answer for that one yet. It also diverts from the highly-mobile "by phones, for phones" ecosystem that I'm trying to promote.
* Actually one can already save voice messages on the phone, but I don't think they're portable, think they save them on an internal/non-accessible memory. So you could already do the above mobcasting, in a sense. But what I really want to do is tie this in with NaviBlog's location-specificity. More on that very soon.
* Also for those of you dying to see it, the NaviBlog website will be up from tomorrow March 30th in stages, so don't worry if we're not 100%... we're getting there.

Hi there,

When I use the term mobcasting, the main focus is having a group of people (ie, a smart mob), simultaneously uploading podcasts from their mobile phone. Using audioblogger.com, we've been able to get voice messages posted within a minute or so of recording them, so it works fairly well. But I hope we'll be able to develop an open source mobcasting tool that can be installed on any server, since audioblogger only works in the US and requires a long distance call.
