* Just to put the Western Hemisphere back on the map (I mean, the Global South Western Hemisphere), there are movements right now that we should be looking into, and supporting. For example, the 4th democratic elections in Haiti since the 90s, where ever since the Haitians emancipated themselves and declared independence more than 200 years ago, France/US/Canada have made it a tradition to ensure that such a destablizing thing as a non-white real democracy could never prosper. The most recent US/France coup d'etat - that was subsequently papered over by occuping UN "peacekeeping" troops - forcibly rendered the former Haitian President Aristide out of the country into exile. It is widely believed he was kidnapped.
The great thing is... he's still alive! I'm surprised he wasn't just shot on the way and dumped into the Atlantic. I mean, just a random black guy right? The latest on the new President Preval following in the steps of former President Aristide, but for how long... here.
* In the same vein, and I'm not going to talk about the whole of South America's push towards localized, aboriginal democracy, and other Bolivarian revolutions, but put in a word for the new alternative (as in, opposed to mainstream) force that the Zapatistas represent. There is something like a Mao's Long March taking place in Mexico right now, with Zapatista leaders drumming up support in the traditionally poor aboriginal communities for rights and representation. Thank god for Mexican President Fox, who has just kept them out of sight so that NAFTA goes on smoothly without further ado.
By the way, bonds on the Mexican Peso were introduced to me just last month by E-Trade Japan for a nice 6-7%. Something to think about, when minorities are being repressed. The latest on leader Subcomandante Marcos and his Zapatista Army here, and the sniggers from the LA Times across the border.
