This time around I am dedicating an entire playlist to my favorite Japanese acts... Some of this stuff is really old but has a lot more life than most of the younger "pretty boy", "pretty girl" acts currently eating up the airwaves and MTV. From Techno (lots!) to Rap, Ambient to Acid Jazz, Pops to Rock, I have it all. Some of the names you may recognize, some you may not... look for guys like Sketch Show, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Yoshinori Sunahara (one of Mandali's favorites), Cornelius, Denki Groove, United Future Organization and quite a few more.
Probably the first Japanese musician to catch my attention was a guy named Toshinobu Kubota... smooth voice and kinda soulful. That was way back in the old days... kinda drifted away from his style of music but "big respect" to him for sparking my interest in Japanese groups. He's up in New York doing his thing these days so I haven't really heard too much about him lately. Still listen to him on occasion but you won't find any of his music here this time around. These days I prefer some thumping Denki Groove or mellower Sketch Show.
As a bonus for you Techno-heads, I threw in a long track by Denki Groove, its their live performance at Mayday 2001... pretty hot stuff. Not recommended for the faint at heart.
Okay, you have my "J-Tripping" mix coming your way... sit back, open up your mind a bit and listen to some great music, Japanese-style.
